What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based treatment for processing trauma, distressing memories, and intrusive symptoms. EMDR therapy is a structured approach that involves identifying and reprocessing memories and their associated emotional responses by changing how these memories are stored in the brain. Originally developed for the treatment of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), EMDR therapy has become one of the three leading evidence-based treatment modalities for PTSD. In Alberta, EMDR therapy is also used to treat anxiety, depression, and negative thought patterns rooted in past experiences that continue to hold you back.

Traumatic and distressing incidents can continue to cause dysregulation in both the body and the brain. As a somatic (body-based) treatment, EMDR integrates traumatic and distressing memories into a more positive (adaptive) neural framework. These new networks are thought to result in a reduction of emotional duress, development of new insights, and integration into new learning about the self and others, increasing a felt sense of safety within the world.

EMDR can be delivered effectively through telepsychology, however in-person EMDR may be best for some clients.

How can EMDR help me?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy can help by decreasing the distress associated with trauma-related beliefs and thoughts resulting from unprocessed memories and distressing events. Many people who receive treatment from EMDR show symptom improvement in as little as 6-12 sessions.

Whether you are in Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, Vancouver, Kelowna, or rural Alberta or British Columbia, EMDR therapy can help you overcome traumatic incidents and memories so you can live free of persistent thoughts, distressing images, and negative beliefs that are holding you back.
