Although there are countless definitions of mindfulness, we define Mindfulness as the following:
Mindfulness is the conscious and non-judgmental awareness of the present moment
Mindfulness is NOT the absence of thoughts. It is not blocking thoughts, and sitting in silence. It is not trying to create a “blank” in your brain by sitting on a colorful cushion with your hands on your knees. Current scientific evidence suggests that mindfulness meditation may help reduce symptoms of stress, including anxiety and depression, and may help improve sleep.
Mindfulness based therapy techniques teaches you to sink into experiences and engage with them while practicing non-judge mentality of thoughts and acceptance in the present moment.
In mindfulness, individuals tune in to a variety of mental and physical experiences so that you can lean to control your thoughts in a helpful way, rather than feeling controlled by them.
Mindfulness can help you connect back to yourself; it can foster an inner sense of wellbeing that can be integrated into daily practice. Mindfulness is not a stand-alone treatment. It is an adjunct intervention that often “pairs up” with other modalities and integrated into treatment plans.
This includes integration into cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) counselling sessions, which can help people separate themselves from negative thought patterns, physical sensations, and emotions without becoming overwhelmed by them.
